| Raghugs | Try decreasing "installed by-default" packages that are not meant for that computer,
For example don't install cups if the user didn't configure printer via yast, don't install nfs or samba stuff if the user don't have a wired/wireless ethernet card, It would make users system less bloated, they don't need to install updates for packages that are irrelevant to them, running services also can be vastly decreased, it means bootup time also can be shorten. installation time also would be decreased, that is hardware/network related packages should be installed only when configuring the respective hardware/network service. I agree with this, but not at all; can be installed for example cups and other applications, but at installation YaST could ask from the user, if he want the cupsd service to run by default, and another services for example LVM, RAID-stuff, CPUFreq, sane etc, these can be auto-detected -sartek 08:37, 31 January 2007 (UTC) |
| Tom1200 | Just a thought, but I wonder if there's a chance that one of the next openSUSE commercial boxes will get a new, nifty design - something like the new Vista box ('cause a polished product sells better AFAIK) - just an idea. (21:13, 31 January 2007 (UTC)) |
| njdube | UPnP Support in YaST Firewall
The YaST Firewall needs a feature to support UPnP in routers. When I open ports in my firewall I should be presented an option to open those ports in my router's UPnP software. An example feature could be something like clicking a checkbox saying "Forward Ports in router via UPnP" or something along those lines. Here are some possible places to get the code. http://linux-igd.sourceforge.net http://pupnp.sourceforge.net |
| njdube | Data Security, Destruction & Forensic Features
After recently playing around with programs like "The Sleuth Kit" and "Autopsy" (http://sleuthkit.org) I decided I would like to see features added to KDE with the same functions as these programs. I would like to be able to use KDE's file manager as a graphical front end for data recovery tools. I would also like to have features in KDE to easily destroy data. So when I right click on a file to either throw in the trash or delete I should also have the choice to destroy the data so it can't be recovered. Considering the data age we live in and the growing "need" for governments to spy on us and treat every one like "terrorist" I believe security and privacy need to be focused on and enhanced in openSUSE. Not to mention a need to be more, well... intuitive. I would also like to see the /tmp folder moved and divided among the user accounts. So for example the tmp for each user would be /home/"user"/.tmp or /root/.tmp I consider that structure more efficient and secure as user's tmp would then be in /home and for those who use an encrypted file system for /home would also have there tmp in the same secure place. I believe encryption and over all security and protection of privacy and data theft need to be more intuitive for Linux new comers. Doing these things should also help improve Linux adoption on the desktop. Point being, I shouldn't have to bend over backwords to secure my data or destroy it if need be. |
| djurodrljaca | I noticed that SmartPM downloads packages a lot faster than YAST. Could you use a similar way for downloading packages as SmartPM? |
| gerberb | Could we get a list of all svn's for opensuse from https://forgesvn1.novell.com/ perferably a link on the main opensuse wiki and on the Developer Home Page? |
