Introduction

Speaker: jpr (04:12:06 PM) jpr: Welcome to the time shifted openSUSE GNOME meeting! suseROCKs: Isn't it the "time shift that never stops shifting" meeting? rodrigo_: 80.69.90.211 for the gobby session rodrigo_: password 'gnome' jpr: 11.0 is out ,the schedule for 11.1 is posted now jpr: much shorter development cycle this time around nags [n=nags@c-24-6-157-39.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] entered the room.

Review any new common issues users are having

Speaker: suseROCKs (04:13:41 PM) ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Review any new common issues users are having (suseROCKs) suseROCKs: can you enlighten us what the goal of 11.1 is (wrt to shorter cycle)? jpr: suseROCKs: ... jpr: suseROCKs: q&a :-) suseROCKs: hey you brought it up!  :-) ok ok hobbsc: i'd like to add one to the common issuses. i'm still getting 'failed to contact repository' or what-have-you errors after some updates suseROCKs: hobbsc: in gpk or zypper? hobbsc: gpk hobbsc: zypper is fine +++suseROCKs points at sreeves He's the man. rodrigo_: hobbsc: I get download errors, but then you retry and it works, always the 2nd time rodrigo_: with zypper hobbsc: i'll keep that in mind suseROCKs: I think the most common problem is pulse audio, although on the #suse channel, I don't see it being brought up much anymore. hobbsc: but it shouldn't have to be ran twice hobbsc: it's misleading rodrigo_: yeah, the packages in packman don't have pulseaudio activated in their config (xine, vlc) rodrigo_: and are giving problems to lots of users :( suseROCKs: are we working with the packman folks to resolve that? rodrigo_: well, it's hard to have them a default config that just works in gnome rodrigo_: but yes, trying to come up with a solution for all sreeves: hobbsc: is there more information in a details box when you get that error ? hobbsc: suseROCKs: not that i recall, i'd have to duplicate it hobbsc: i'll screen it next time rodrigo_: hopefully for 11.1 we'll use PA everywhere hobbsc: lots of our users are complaining about it hobbsc: at least in my office hobbsc: so perhaps it's a bad install +++suseROCKs thinks hobbsc meant sreeves, not him. hobbsc: er hobbsc: yeah hobbsc: that was for sreeves hobbsc: i'm exhausted, disregard metavoid [n=nnd@62.117.85.106] entered the room. suseROCKs: okay anyone else see common problems? Generally most questions people come in here or #suse for have been easily answerable (which is good for me hehe) sreeves: hobbsc: and I would be interested in the /var/log/pk_backend_zypp file when that occurs hobbsc: sreeves: i'll keep that in mind suseROCKs: jpr: on to next topic jpr: ok

Helping Hands Update

Speaker: suseROCKS (04:23:07 PM) ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - Helping Hands Update (suseROCKS) jpr: suseROCKs: ... suseROCKs: Helping Hands... big success last week because of all of you... suseROCKs: We had 73 people in the channel at that time and seem to have brought in some newcomer regulars to the channel as a result. suseROCKs: Next week Friday, we will begin with targeted presentations. openOffice with thorsten and rodo_, and the following week Evolution with the Evo team. suseROCKs: and for all asking where the transcript is, it will be up shortly. Had trouble getting it wiki-fied. bugbot: New openSUSE 11.0 (GNOME) bug 406170 filed by jreidinger@novell.com. bugbot: Bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/406170 Major, P5 - None, NEW, gnome policykit Authentication Agent doesn't show enought information suseROCKs: bugbot: not now, wait until Q&A suseROCKs: Anyone have any questions or suggestions based on their observation of last week's event? jpr: just that I thought it was really great jpr: and very useful generating new channel traffice rodrigo_: it looked to me that people were a bit shy at the beginning, when it was like a 'presentation' rodrigo_: so it's probably good to open the floor for free conversation asap suseROCKs: I do have one suggestion.... I think we should have a regular monthly general session apart from our targeted sessions. Are you guys up for doing that once a month? pygi: perhaps we should do a "Burning" one week :D rodrigo_: +1 suseROCKs: rodrigo_: was that a +1 for general session or +1 for burning pygi? rodrigo_: for general session suseROCKs: :-) rodrigo_: as for burning pygi, +10 :) hobbsc: i'd be able to make a general session pygi: damn, why do you people wanna burn me?! +++pygi hides rodrigo_: :) pygi: your only tools are broken, and I'm resistant to fire pygi: so take that :p suseROCKs: ok so let's decide on an optimal time for us all to be around for a regular monthly general session. I'd like it not to be during regular Helping Hands session because there's too many and I don't want to take away from tht. ivanz [n=i-nZ@nat67.mia.three.co.uk] entered the room. jpr: AI: suseROCKs to find time for regular montly session

openSUSE 11.0 Updates

Speaker: jpr/all (04:29:37 PM) ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - 11.0 Updates (jpr/all) jpr: ok, updates jpr: remember to tag with gnome-update jpr: currently nautilus and firefox updates were posted jpr: yast2-gtk and packagekit updates are in the pipe jpr: it would be great to pre-test them at http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.0-test jpr: add that repo jpr: and they should start popping up jpr: there are a couple of smaller ones FunkyPenguin: nuts i forgot to do the monsoon update jpr: i expect to get a bunch more jpr: as i review all crit/major bugs and tag them with priority suseROCKs: just added the repo... FunkyPenguin: jpr: so just create a new bug and add the patch and ensure that gnome-update is in the title? jpr: FunkyPenguin: in the whiteboard status FunkyPenguin: ah ok thanks darkmatter left the room (quit: "Leaving."). jpr: FunkyPenguin: is there perhaps a set of patches for/from alan to look at? darkmatter [n=darkmatt@unaffiliated/darkmatter] entered the room. FunkyPenguin: jpr: just the one patch which will bring bundled monsoon to the same level as G:C jpr: ok jpr: anything else on updating? darkmatter left the room (quit: Client Quit). darkmatter [n=darkmatt@unaffiliated/darkmatter] entered the room.

Time shift meeting discussion

Speaker: jpr (04:33:50 PM) ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - Time shift meeting discussion (jpr) rodrigo_: a couple of PA fixes are waiting for testing, swam-ids, so should be posted soon jpr: rodrigo_: ah, good jpr: ok, so we've made a bit of a hash of the time shift since the daylight savings jpr: we never gave a clear time to cjp jpr: and i forgot once or twice about the shift jpr: so jpr: do we want to keep doing this? suseROCKs: jpr: I think before we address proper time for timeshift, we need to address the fact that we haven't really boosted attendance for those regions. jpr: if so we really need to clarify the time for CJP jpr: suseROCKs: yah, it was always iffy at the time we decided to continue rodrigo_: I think the shifted meetings have less attendance, but usually they go ok, so I would keep them suseROCKs: rodrigo_: well do you think there's any way we can encourage people in those regions to show up? jpr: if we keep it, i think we should just follow the project meeting time shift KevinYo: I would keep them too, if only because otherwise, in the Americas at least, the normal meetings fall during when people are at work (or school, in my case) and the early meetings are sometimes the only ones I can make during the Fall-Spring jpr: then we at least try and generate some consistency KevinYo: jpr: +1 rodrigo_: suseROCKs: maybe with some helping hands thing at their time? jpr: that would be -2 hours from the start of this particular meeting gekker [n=gekker@137.65.133.161] entered the room. rodrigo_: oh, yes we should do as the project meeting time suseROCKs: that would be fine with me jpr: AI: jpr to relay to CJP the canonical time shift time bugbot: New openSUSE 11.0 (GNOME) bug 406173 filed by awafaa@opensuse.org. jpr: ok bugbot: Bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/406173 Normal, P5 - None, NEW, Update patch for Monsoon suseROCKs: canonical??? This isn't ubuntu!

Benchmark / Performance testing

Speaker: suseROCKs (04:40:28 PM) ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - Benchmark / Performance testing (suseROCKs) jpr: suseROCKs: ... go go go suseROCKs: Amazing how I ended up in charge of this topic... rodrigo_: suseROCKs again??? :-) suseROCKs: This is CJP's topic really, but he hasn't been around to handle this topic and I offered to assist. suseROCKs: however I should mention that hobbsc is very interested in participating in this project. And maybe he should take the lead on it? jpr: i think federico would be very interested in helping to profile suseROCKs: and he conveniently disappears... jpr: login time at least suseROCKs: so, should we continue to expense time on developing howtos for profiling and such or just focus on creating a new script to be packaged for 11.1? rodrigo_: I'd vote for both suseROCKs: Because honestly, I'm not seeing much in the way of questions of performance these days. jpr: federico wrote up performance pages in the past jpr: for the wiki jpr: not sure where they are exactly suseROCKs: yeah, I need to continue cleaning up the wiki, but I'm in a sort of holding pattern since the -wiki guys are bitching abit about formats. jpr: the GNOME/ subsection stuff? jpr: KDE/ uses it too +++jpr likes the bread crumbs and partitioning of related info jpr: ok jpr: so suseROCKs: yeah jpr: AI: casualprogrammer/suseRocks to discuss performance testing with federico suseROCKs: can we add hobbsc to that AI please?  :-) jpr: sure

openSUSE 11.1 Features

Speaker: vuntz (04:46:35 PM) ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - 11.1 Features (vuntz) jpr: vuntz: about? suseROCKs: I'll step up on this one ... jpr: http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Ideas/11.1 suseROCKs: I forgot to send out an email to people to submit their ideas. I did so on -gnome ML yesterday suseROCKs: Didn't see it show up on -announce though jpr: it did suseROCKs: nagappan recommended yesterday that one of you blog about it on planetgnome to get more ideas submitted. suseROCKs: deadline was extended to Monday July 7th jpr: ok suseROCKs: I'm not worthy enough to be on planetgnome so it has to be one of you guys or more. jpr: :-) jpr: we should actually get you there jpr: so - open discussion jpr: is anyone particularly for or against any ideas on the page? jpr: or interesting in volunteering to test/develop/document? suseROCKs: there have been the occasional visitor to the channel asking "where can I submit ideas" so it is useful. jpr: for anything in particular jpr: (i will ask this question *many* times in the coming weeks) KevinYo: I like the updated PulseAudio volume mixer idea. suseROCKs: jpr: I suggest a quick "ideas" meeting right after the deadline to start assigning and stuff. jpr: that will be tricky jpr: with GUADEC in the way next week suseROCKs: oh wait, you have GUADEC jpr: yes jpr: so probably the meeting after guadec suseROCKs: Is everyone on your team going? jpr: mw and rodrigo are not going suseROCKs: good, I don't want to be left holding the bag here.  :-) +++jpr would particularly like to see the printing stuff get sorted out rodrigo_: we'll do the assigning mw and me then :)

GNOME 2.23 Update

Speaker: mw (04:52:12 PM)

ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - 2.23 Update (mw) jpr: mw: ... suseROCKs: too early for our neighbors down south.  :-) jpr: well, its all done except for bindings i think jpr: stuff is starting to appear in factory suseROCKs: So this means we'll be updated to 2.23 in 11.0? jpr: time to get at least a VM going i guess :-) jpr: no jpr: for 11.1 jpr: we'll have 2.24

Pulseaudio Update

Speaker: rodrigo (04:54:39 PM)

ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - Pulseaudio Update (rodrigo) jpr: rodrigo_: ... suseROCKs: so where does 2.23 come into play? suseROCKs: AI to suseROCKs ... type faster! jpr: its in factory now jpr: factory != 11.0 any more suseROCKs: ok jpr: rodrigo_: ... rodrigo_: ok sbrabec left the room (quit: "Leaving."). rodrigo_: so apart from the bugs we talked about earlier, the big thing might be the switch to PA for the whole distro for 11.1 rodrigo_: for which we need first the pulseaudio-glitchfree branch packaged rodrigo_: which I'll have ready for next week jpr: is it actually released yet? rodrigo_: no rodrigo_: just on svn rodrigo_: it will be the future 0.9.11 rodrigo_: it will need a better UI for 11.1 rodrigo_: and much better integration into existing gnome code (volume applet) sbrabec [n=sbrabec@nat/suse/x-bafde180cc70ba13] entered the room. jpr: ok rodrigo_: that's all I have

Agenda for upcoming meeting

Speaker: jpr/all (04:59:21 PM)

ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - Agenda jpr: so, agenda wise jpr: i'm tempted to actually cancel the meeting next week bugbot: New openSUSE 11.0 (GNOME) bug 406179 filed by siegfried.olschner@novell.com. bugbot: Bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/406179 Normal, P5 - None, NEW, Suggestion for enhancement of Gnome Screensaver Preferences dialog jpr: because of guadec suseROCKs: jpr: if you do so, for those of us who are left behind... you'll bring back souveneirs, right? rodrigo_: yeah, I guess it's better jpr: ok suseROCKs: awesome, he agreed!

Questions & Answers

Speaker: jpr/all (05:00:49 PM)

ChanServ!ChanServ@services.: ChanServ has changed the topic to: Meeting in progress - Q&A suseROCKs: ok Q&A... What is the goal of 11.1? New features? tightening up of the existing 11.0? claes left the room (quit: "Leaving"). jpr: i would like to see more of a tightening of existing 11.0 for a couple reasons jpr: 1) we put in a couple of riskier pieces in 11.1 (PK, PA) and would like to see us start utilizing them more jpr: 2) shorter life cycle jpr: other questions :-)? suseROCKs: yes, you brought up the test repo earlier. suseROCKs: any guidance as to what we should/shouldn't do? jpr: just add it suseROCKs: I see a list of items in upgrades (really hate that word) jpr: and install its updates jpr: and *definitely* jpr: report problems jpr: with those packages jpr: so we don't send them out to the world :-) suseROCKs: ok lakhil left the room (quit: "Leaving"). +++suseROCKs tries to think of more questions... suseROCKs: What is everyone's favorite color, month of the year, television show? KevinYo: lol snorp: a/s/l? suseROCKs: heh snorp suseROCKs: oh hey rodrigo_ any progress on the bugzilla taskmaster thingy? rodrigo_: suseROCKs: haven't heard from captain_magnus anything suseROCKs: ok sbrabec left the room (quit: "Leaving."). rodrigo_: I've got a question, would people like to experiment with some default panel/desktop setups? suseROCKs: rodrigo_: explain sbrabec [n=sbrabec@nat/suse/x-31d17b5572a242ba] entered the room. sbrabec left the room (quit: Client Quit). sbrabec [n=sbrabec@nat/suse/x-15814f2e94000ced] entered the room. rodrigo_: as we talked in the helping hands thing last week, the panel can be tweaked a lot, to have even something like MacOS panel rodrigo_: so, I wonder if we should try some different setups than just the bottom panel with menu KevinYo: +1 suseROCKs: ok I'm definitely on board with that as I am very frustrated with customizing mine. rodrigo_: I've been using a transparent panel in the last week or so, and really, just a small change makes the desktop look greater :) KevinYo: I like the bottom menu thing we've got going but I'd definitely be interested in checking out what we could do different... rodrigo_: and this impacts users a lot, so maybe we can find some eye candy default setup KevinYo: I added something like that to the 11.1 idea page so I'd love to help get something done ;-) rodrigo_: also, been playing with screenlets/desklets rodrigo_: (which I found quite useless, but users would love I'm sure) suseROCKs: screenlets has its uses, but its method of use is annoying. maniac103: using 20MB of res memory per desktop widget is annoying onestone left the room (quit: Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer)). rodrigo_: yes, that's annoying indeed rodrigo_: but well, if we like the idea, we could write a better implementation/fix it suseROCKs: rodrigo_: I'd be all for joining in with you on that project. That's something I'm extremely interested in especially the a11y aspect of it. suseROCKs: Anything else? rodrigo_: ok maniac103: there is already one working on that (his IRC nick is aantn) who works on that suseROCKs: ok I'm taking off now, unless jpr has anything to lecture us about. onestone [n=onestone@e179108205.adsl.alicedsl.de] entered the room. jpr: oops jpr: sorr (05:17:03 PM)
