Installing Ubuntu into Virtualbox

This following guide is based on OpenSUSE 11.0 as the host OS and Ubuntu 8.10 as the guest operating system. I used the Non-OSE Edition of VirtualBox version 2.1.4 as my virtual machine software with Ubuntu version 8.10

  • Ubuntu 8.10

HOWTO guide

Step 1

Setup an operating system profile:

  • Download Ubuntu from here
  • Open VirtualBox and click on the New button and then Next and then enter a name for your virtual machine.
  • Then select Ubuntu for the Operating System type, then select the Version from the respective drop down menus and then OK.
  • Select the amount of memory that will be allocated to Ubuntu.
Warning
Leave a sufficient amount for host OS itself

Step 2

Setup a virtual hard disk:

  • Click on the New button and then the Next button to create a virtual hard disk for Ubuntu, then click Next
  • Select the initial size of it. Then click on the Finish button.
  • Click on the Next button and then the Finish button.

Step 3

Configuring VirtualBox to start the Ubuntu installer from an ISO image file:

  • Select your Ubuntu virtual machine in the VirtualBox main interface and then click on the Machine menu.
  • Click on Settings... and then the CD/DVD-ROM tab and then select the ISO Image File radio button. Once you have done that tell VirtualBox where your ISO image of Ubuntu is and then start your Ubuntu virtual machine.
