[edit]
1. Standard interview pre-test questions
- Age
- Occupation
- Experience self-rating
- What are the three most common applications you use?
- Non-standard questions we would like to try out:
- How many computers do you have in your home? [At work?]
- [How much time do you spend using a computer at home? At work?]
- What reservations do you have, if any, about providing personal information during an OS install process?
- Do you use your computer(s) mostly for work or entertainment?
- Non-standard questions we would like to try out:
[edit]
2. Install Process (first VM)
a question for each major pane of the installer:
- if no questions are applicable, we could ask for qualitative comments on an aspect of thidentify all of the information about the install process which the Subject will need to complete and provide this in an outline (making sure to leave room for the questions which we intend to ask)
- three-five tasks related to installer, such as:
- how large is the disk on which you are installing? [perhaps something more directed, like "please find the information on the summary screen about the partitions and identify important information about that table"]
- create a root account and a user account
- perhaps set up a non-working network card and ask them to change the configuration such that it will work after install...
[edit]
3. Questionnaire: Subject Demographics: MULTIPLE CHOICE as much as possible
- How much time should a OS install take? (long-20-60 min, short-5-20 min, don't know)
- How long would it take you to get used to a new OS? (day, week, month)
- How important is the OS to your computing experience? [(possible no ideas)]
- How much effort are you willing to expend trying new OSs at home?
- How much resistance would you express at work to using a new OS?
- How large (what % of the total disk space, [% of consciousness?]) should an OS be?
- Partitioner question? show screen shot and ask them to comment?
- Would you consider installing an OS?
- Have you ever installed an OS?
- How frequently have you performed an OS installation? [(once ever, once a year, etc)]
- Do you have experience with data management/backing up your data?
- How much time might you expect to spend preparing for the installation of an OS?
- Would you upgrade an existing OS installation or would you install the new version fresh?
- What do you expect to encounter[/want to use] during an installation process, check all that apply:
- partitioner
- network settings
- personal information
- keyboard layout
- language
- region
- accessibility enhancements
- password
- account creation
- appearance customization
- [theme, screen saver, background image, XGL]
<Open-ended question to determine whether they understand the concept of root vs user...>
- What software would you like to see pre-loaded?
- Firewall, office, graphics/drawing, media player, others?
[Hmm. Do we expect them to list everything down to the calculator? Is this what's covered by the three most used apps question?]
[edit]
4. 1st Boot Experience (second VM)
Briefly direct the Subject through the OS environment. Perhaps something as simple as "open up a browser and go to XYZ website" [Even if it's with what seems like a simple question. What's a common thing a person will do with a new desktop? We can ask them to do it.] Have them navigate to a web page showing different aspects of various distributions' installers. Ask them to comment.
