LCD brightness is not adjustable from within OpenSuse, BUT you can pre-adjust brightness at GRUB boot screen, and this is retained for session. Tried other utilities to do this, to no avail.
  • Haven't tried to get webcam to work yet.
  • Touchpad works both horiz. and vert. scroll (but horiz. scroll makes things a bit hairy, so turned it off)
  • Wireless only worked using ndiswrapper and Broadcom Corporation Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI Card rev 01 driver (bcmwl5..., blacklisted BCM43xx).

Taking the drivers off Vista (bcmwl6...) did not work. Neither did bcm-fwcutter work with BCM43xx (with any bcm drivers, I am pretty sure I tried them all...). But, now working with WPA, so I am happy. Default audio driver works perfectly, and volume control on keypad works with it (other play/pause buttons not working yet). As well, plugging in the headphone jack disconnects the audio from the main speakers as it should (Kubuntu 7.04 did not do this). Runs stable and fast, with fast boot time (faster than Kubuntu, and wireless connection is now absolutely reliable; Knetworkmanager kept crashing in Kubuntu).

In order to make sound working add following repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_10.3_Update/ and install alsa-driver-kmp package. You may need to adjust recording volume controls from command line using:

% amixer set "Mic Boost" 3
   % amixer set Digital 0dB
   % amixer set Capture 20dB

(see Bug 357450 for more information) I haven't tried to install wireless drivers with ndisswrapper because native drivers exist and are supposed to work. See Bug 358337 for more information. I added reports for suspending and hotplug problems, see Bug 357452 and Bug 358336.

6) touchpad works, webcam work out-of-box, card reader not tested, modem not working, fimgerprint reader not working
Quick Media buttons and remote control generate normal key events. The biggest problem si that brightness controll is not working - which is critical when nb running on batteries.

HP Pavilion dv6736nr 10.3 DVD Image:22px-Tick.png 1) Image:22px-Tick.png Image:22px-Tick.png Image:22px-Tick.png 2) 3) 4)

1) With latest NVidia drivers. Need to use drivers from NVidia's website otherwise system to defaults to VESA driver. Once the driver is installed 3D is enabled, you can use an external monitor, and make other adjustments with NVidia's tool.
2) Laptop uses Atheros chipset but Madwifi doesn't support it. Works fine with NDISwrapper. Followed instructions from {http://www.andrewd18.com/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapperinfo-gui.php] everything went smoothly.
3) System locks up when trying to hibernate won't suspend system not recognized by pmutils so will have to wait
4) Builtin Webcam Image:22px-Tick.png
4) Media Keys Image:22px-Tick.png
4) Remote Image:22px-Tick.png

  • Everything else works great except for hibernate/suspend (don't use it so not a major issue.
  • Linux actually runs faster and lasts longer on the battery than Vista which was preinstalled. While Vista has problems playing 480p content Linux will play 1080p just fine. I've used it to make presentations hooked up to a projector.
  • The media keys work except for the Quickplay button (DVD button pulls up Amarok).
  • Remote works too (uses equivalent keys on keyboard)
  • Haven't tried light-scribe will update when I do

Works much better than Vista dumping windows for good now.

2) The Broadcom card wasn't detected for wireless, so I assume that its Bluetooth functions don't work either, but I haven't tried.
3) suspend to disk Image:22px-Tick.png
3) suspend to RAM not tested
4) Touchpad works, but for some reason neither YAST nor KDE is able to disable it even when you tell them to (I hate touchpads). Fortunately I was able to tape some cardboard over it to effectively disable it. Of course, if you like touchpads, then there's no problem.
Important: If you're doing the 64-bit installtion you must add the boot option "noapic" or the video won't work (use F3 at the install prompt). 32-bit doesn't seem to need the extra boot option. Other than that, the install went perfectly.

If you want the wireless to work, I'd recommend the Linksys WPC55AG wireless card since that worked for me, but if want a different card, make sure that you check compatability before you buy one (http://linux-wless.passys.nl/ is a good site), particularly if you're running in 64-bit mode. You're pretty much going to want a card that works with the kernel since it's difficult to get 64-bit Windows drivers for ndiswrapper to use.

  • I haven't tried dual head, TV out, PCMCIA, the new PCMIA style slot or modem
  • Converting a CD to OGG in KDE cause the pointer to go crazy if you touch the track pad, works fine afterward (must be an IDE problem).
  • * Proprietary ATI drivers require you to share 128MB of system RAM with the graphics card (freezes or loads default unaccellerated drivers otherwise).
  • ** I couldn't get the wireless working with NDISWrapper in 64-bit even with latest NDISWrapper and 64-Bit XP drivers. I suspect the 64-bit XP drivers were not suitable

Big improvement over 10.1! Installation was a piece of cake and MUCH faster. This system was purchased new in October 2006. has had 10.1 on it as well. Has dual 100 gb SATA hard drives. nVidia GeForce Go 7600, and Centrino Duo ICH7 audio, etc. Will report more as finish tweaks and updates. Just installed 10.2 on this system on 2007-01-04. Audio workds but not able to control between headphones and speakers, will likely have to do as in 10.1 from the following (link coming soon):... Wireless works initially under Network Manager, but starts to become "flaky" under load when using WEP. Need to use updated ipw3945 and ieee80211 (http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/#downloads)‌. May have to disable NM and only run under ifup/down (testing still). WEP still doesn't work reliably under 10.1 or 10.2 with Network Manager nor with ifup/down until update ipw & ieee. Video 3d - have to download nVidia drivers for 3d from http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html - DO NOT enable Xgl before installing the nVidia driver, system will be so slow as to be unusable. DVD-DL-Lightscribe (report coming soon). TV-Tuner card (report coming soon). Built-in webcam (report coming). Hotkeys & Fn Keys (works! when hotkeys in sysconfig enabled). IR Remote (report coming). Modem (report coming). Memcard slot (report coming). HDMI (report coming). Expansion slot (n/a yet). Touchpad vertical scroll works, no horizontal scroll (yet). Microphone (report coming).

Installation was a piece of cake and fast. This system was custom ordered/configured through the Costco/HP site on February 2007.

  • CPU: Duo Core2 2.0 Ghz T7200.
  • Has dual 120 gb SATA hard drives setup as (Linux software md) RAID1 mirror array
  • nVidia GeForce Go 7600 PureVideo HD. and Centrino Duo ICH7 audio. Has all updates as of May 30th, 2007
  • Audio works but not able to control between headphones and speakers, with normal Suse packages and updates.

Had to download and install manually the latest ALSA drivers to get it to switch, but still a little odd, have to mute/unmute to make it switch (doesn't detect automatically inserting/removing headphone jack properly).

DO NOT enable Xgl before installing the nVidia driver, system will be so slow as to be unusable.

  • HD-DVDW TS-L802A has lots of problems.

Can Burn, but can not read burned CDs or DVDs (but other computers or players can _usually_ read them, can not reliably read DVDs and CDs. There is a partial work-around listed at: http://hawkes-haven.com/blog/making-hd-dvd-toshibats-l802a-able-to-read-under-linux.
