LG GSA 4081B Image:22px-Tick.png This was initially working fine until attempted to burn an ISO. Since then the CD is not recognised by windows or Linux. cdrecord -scanbus can not detect the drive any more. I note a similar problem happened with LG drives with an old version of Mandrake (9.3), but can not see any record of this under suse 10.1...

I had this drive working under SuSE 9.2 Professional, and also 9.3.Need to ensure that device has correct name, linux numbers drives in sequence a b c d for First master drive, First slave drive, Second Master drive, second slave drive. You should not install it as a master drive if the first drive doesn't have a slave. Trying to get it to work as an external DVD burner under SuSE 10 OSS, not detected.

(2006/09/30) - NEC ND-3550 Tested on SUSE 10.1 and 10 Burned DVDs and CDs(although a few corrupted JPG files have resulted... Always verify your DVDs/CDs) Reading from commercial DVDs and audioCD is fine, also the copyprotected ones. --Kennneth Aar

(2006/09/03) - Tested on SuSE 10.1 with DVD+R (single layer, multisession) and standard CD-R with no problems. Commercial CD audio not tested (neither extraction nor playing). --Noelamac

Umm beg to differ.

Does NOT work at all with Linux. Tried SUSE and Fedora Core. I checked the Hardware Compatibility List for this drive, and it turns out that ALL of the low end NEC Drives are problematic with Linux. Read only. Audio CD'S don't play (known problem) nor can you ever write to this device from Linux.

For windows, it works great. 4 months of frustration...

I am going to prolly get a sony to replace this.

Nothing on newegg tells you this doesn't work with Linux.

On the NEC site at: http://www.sw.nec.co.jp/products/optical/en/ND-3550A/index.shtml you will read: required os: Windows(R) 2000, Windows(R) XP Home, Professional(SP2)

The Linux HCL at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/cdrom.html says:

17.3. Notes

All CD-ROM drives should work similarly for reading data. There are various compatibility problems with audio CD playing utilities. (Especially with newer low-end NEC drives.) Some alpha drivers may not have audio support yet.

Believe it!
