GNOME CD/DVD Creator

From openSUSE

This is a simple disk burning application that is part of the Nautilus file manager. It does not allow a lot of customization of the burning process -- for that, look at more full-featured applications like Brasero -- but it does provide a simple, integrated way to burn simple disks.

Contents

Burning a Data CD/DVD

When you open the application, the screen will look fairly close to a normal Nautilus window, except that it will say "CD/DVD Creator Folder" at the top. To add files to be burned to a disk, drag and drop them onto the window. When you have added at least one file, a Write to Disk button appears at the upper right of the window. Once you have added all the files you want to burn, click that button. A simple dialog will pop up; it asks for the following values :

* which disk you want to write to; choose the appropriate option from the drop down list (note : choosing image file lets you create an image file that can later be burned to a disk)
* the name of the disk; enter a name for the disk or accept the default
* data size; this isn't editable, but the disk to which you're writing must have at least this much writable space
* write speed; you should select the speed from the drop down list

Copying a Disk

You can copy a disk either to an image file on your computer or to another disk. To copy a disk, insert the disk you want to copy into a CD/DVD drive. Open a Nautilus window and click on the Computer icon in the toolbar at the top. Right-click on the icon for the CD/DVD drive (it should have the name of the disk you want to copy after the colon) and choose Copy Disk from the context menu. You will see the same options as those listed in the Burning a Data CD/DVD section above. If you have only one CD/DVD drive and you choose to write to that drive, the application will first create an image file on your hard drive, ask you to switch to blank media, and then write to the disk. This is important if you have limited hard drive space. If you choose File Image from the list, it will create a file image on your computer.

Note : In OpenSuse 10.3, if you hit Cancel rather than copying the CD/DVD, the disk icon may show without a disk name. You can right-click on the icon and choose Mount Volume from the context menu to see the disk again.

Burning a Disk Image

To write an image file to a new disk, right-click on the image file and choose Write to Disk from the context menu. This will burn the image file to create a new disk with the contents of the file. If you treat an image file like a standard data file, Gnome CD/DVD Creator will ask whether you really mean to burn the contents of the image file or just copy the file onto a disk like a normal data file.

Burning an Audio CD

When you insert a blank disk, Nautilus will ask whether you want to Ignore, Make Audio CD, or Make Data CD. If you choose Make Audio CD, Nautilus will open an application like Banshee to allow you to create an Audio CD.
