Introduction

Started at --> 00 <mw> Hello everyone, and welcome to our weekly opensuse gnome meeting <mw> jpr had a scheduling conflict today, so i'm taking over as moderator this time around <sreeves> mw - do you have some id - how do I know you are legit <mw> sreeves: i'm identified with nickserv! i must be legit ;) <rodrigo_> :) <suseROCKs> but is nickserv legit? <mw> suseROCKs: no comment :) <mw> anyway, let's dive into it <suseROCKs> ai to sreeves... find out if nickserv is legit.

Factory Testing

Started at --> 00 <mw> sreeves: go! <sreeves> I dont have much to update this week from last week <suseROCKs> is Gnome installable now? <mw> ok, neither do i <mw> suseROCKs: good question. i'm not sure <captain_magnus> mw: I dont see any GNOME commits on the -commit ml list... Do you know why <mw> captain_magnus: i haven't commited much since last year <captain_magnus> Oh... When will that start to happen? <mw> does anyone know if there's a tool analogous to tinderbox, but to test whether full distro installs succeed, and not just whether it builds? <sreeves> the kernel oops that was killing my vm factory installs has been checked in so I should be able to test again here shortly <mw> captain_magnus: i started working on stuff again yesterday, so more commits should start to show up <rodrigo_> mw: can't the installation be automated with autoyast? <rodrigo_> mw: if so, it could just run on a vm or jail <mw> rodrigo_: yeah, that might work <captain_magnus> rodrigo_: Yes it can... But not at the moment since GNOME pattern is broken <mw> can it be done totally automatically, though? <rodrigo_> not sure, will add an AI for finding out <mw> want it? <rodrigo_> for finding it out? yes <captain_magnus> mw: Yes DimStar (n=dominiqu@92.80.36.58) has joined #opensuse-gnome <mw> AI for rodrigo: investigate how to best automate nightly fresh installs <mw> captain_magnus: are you interested too, or were you answering whether it can be done totally automatically? <captain_magnus> mw: I was answering :-) <mw> ok <suseROCKs> after getting the pattern install fixed, what's the timeframe goal for getting the next version of GNOME installed and tested? <mw> suseROCKs: i hope middle to end of next week <suseROCKs> awesome <mw> suseROCKs: mauropm is on vacation still, so i've been covering for him a bit suseROCKs cancels his major surgery appointments in favor of testing GNOME next week. <mw> but i'm done with what otherwise would be his stuff for the time being <mw> OK, anything else before we move on to the next topic? we still have 3 minutes left :) <rodrigo_> new pulseaudio, with lots of fixes, is soon to show up on factory, so please have a try if possible <suseROCKs> Perhaps after we get it fixed... someone could create a testing page? <cyberorg> kiwi can be used to test installation <suseROCKs> of things they want us all to test? <mw> suseROCKs: good idea <mw> focussing on what's new and cool but maybe broken. great idea <rodrigo_> AI for suseROCKs ? :) <mw> i'd say so suseROCKs learns quickly to shut up <suseROCKs> Ok I'll set up the page today <mw> great eward (n=erw@nat/novell/x-b3cf3315a7514a16) has left #opensuse-gnome <rodrigo_> you know that in these meetings, if you talk, you get work assigned :) <mw> AI for suseROCKS: set up a page listing what's new and cool but maybe broken and therefore needs more testing attention jkress has quit ("Leaving.") <mw> anything else? otherwise i'll turn the floor over to suseROCKS <suseROCKs> you're jumping ahead. <mw> doh, you're right <rodrigo_> mw: yeah, tasks list 1st

Task Review

Started at --> 00 <mw> boyd! go! <suseROCKs> jpr misses a meeting and everything goes to hell  :-) <mw> suseROCKs: hey, this is the first time i've done one ;P <suseROCKs> hehe <rodrigo_> yeah, we don't want mw anymore as moderator :) <mw> btimothy: paging btimothy, paging btimothy <suseROCKs> yeah, when the blind guy points out that mw misses an item.... (tsk tsk) <mw> ok, anyone else want to take this? <captain_magnus> mw: Review current GNOME:Community packages to match the G:C policy... How is that going <mw> captain_magnus: i started it ages ago, but i haven't done anything since. i went through about 1/4 of the packages we had at the time <mw> i did fix up comix today, though <rodrigo_> we need another packaging day, to finish that out I guess <DimStar> mw: Can you (maybe after the meeting) tell me what was up with comix? It was my 'broken package' <mw> DimStar: sure. <mw> DimStar: remind me later <DimStar> mw: will do <btimothy> mw: yo! <captain_magnus> federico1: How is the "Propose a date and organize a multi-screen hackfest" going <btimothy> mw: 'sup? <mw> btimothy: see the topic <captain_magnus> btimothy: Your task list review :-) <btimothy> DANG! MEETING! oops ;) <btimothy> call me an idiot this week <mw> why just this week? <captain_magnus> idiot: Go... <btimothy> everyone knows the drill, if your task is bold, give an update! suseROCKs sees entire room saying "Me?" when captain_magnus says "Idiot go" <btimothy> http://www.rememberthemilk.com/home/opensuse.gnome/1884064/#section.tasks <captain_magnus> suseROCKs: How is the Pattern pages coming along? <suseROCKs> captain_magnus, I have a question about pattern. <btimothy> i need to postpone the mail notification for wiki again <suseROCKs> I created a patterns page, but when I followed your instructions to extract from pat.gz files... there's just one text file in it. what am I supposed to do at that point? <btimothy> rodrigo_: pulse audio? <federico1> captain_magnus: uh, nothing yet on that front <mw> btimothy: who is allowed to update the status on rtm? <captain_magnus> suseROCKs: We can have a chat after the meeting or tomorrow if that is ok with you <federico1> captain_magnus: I'm thinking of having a mini-hackfest, not a whole-week one, since our baby is coming soon <rodrigo_> outside of gnome there is little interest right now for PA, so the task is still ongoing, until everything is good on factory for everyone to have a look at it working <captain_magnus> mw: Anyone with a RTM account that asked for access... <btimothy> mw: if you aren't allowed to, that tells me you didn't sign up for an account and mail captain_magnus or me your account info <suseROCKs> captain_magnus, sure <btimothy> mw: as soon as you have one, you'll have access! <mw> btimothy: i was the first person who doesn't work for rtm to get an account :) <captain_magnus> mw: You never accepted my invitation :-) <mw> captain_magnus: i don't think i saw it <mw> captain_magnus: i'll look later <suseROCKs> mw is smart. any invitation from captain_magnus is suspect. <btimothy> mw: have you discussed alternative meeting times yet? <sreeves> that should be at captain_magnus <btimothy> captain_magnus, davidliang, srag, etc. were supposed to report today <mw> btimothy: we haven't <captain_magnus> btimothy: We have not had the discussion yet <btimothy> captain_magnus: postpone 'til next week <captain_magnus> Yep <btimothy> captain_magnus: will that give sufficient time? <btimothy> k <btimothy> anything else to bring up for tasks now? <btimothy> sorry for being totally unorganized ... got sidetracked with packagekit stuff <captain_magnus> Excuses, excuses... <srag> btimothy, hey <btimothy> srag: talk with captain_magnus after the meeting abt. schedule times (see the tasks) <srag> sure <btimothy> thanks! <btimothy> mw: back to you! <mw> so we're all tasked out then?

Meeting Theme

Started at --> 00 <mw> suseROCKs: your turn <suseROCKs> Really?  :-) <suseROCKs> ok if you'll refer to our Themes page, there's several topics that we might want to cover... but if you have suggestions for other interesting topics, please suggest m4r3k has quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host)) <suseROCKs> OpenSync, MultiScreen and Wishlist are the remaining topics. <suseROCKs> Although I feel maybe Wishlist should have its own dedicated event. It would take up too much of our meeting time. <captain_magnus> New topics can be added as well... I created that page as a quick example <captain_magnus> But why not try to go with OpenSync? <suseROCKs> C'mon people... There's got to be somthing interesting going on. <suseROCKs> Perhaps a discussion on webcams  :-) <mw> suseROCKs: btw, almost no pages link to the themes page. i think you should add one from GNOME/Meetings <mw> have we had a multimedia one? <suseROCKs> I think Multimedia would draw people in <mw> abock blogged recently about some cool stuff he is working on <mw> maybe we could get some f-spot representation too <btimothy> maybe a discussion on what we as a whole ought to really be focusing on? <btimothy> you know, top issues types of discussion? <suseROCKs> btimothy, wouldn't that fall under a Wishlist theme? <mw> "Who are we and why are we here?"? <btimothy> possibly <rodrigo_> :) m4r3k-cs (n=marek@mantisha.m4r3k.org) has joined #openSUSE-gnome m4r3k (n=marek@mantisha.m4r3k.org) has joined #openSUSE-gnome <cyberorg> get the guys from Cambridge(davidr and co) <suseROCKs> I actually think a Wishlist Day would be a good one separate from our regular meeting, what do you think? m4r3k-cs has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer)) <rodrigo_> suseROCKs: +1 <suseROCKs> Give out pastries and coffee and such... <btimothy> suseROCKs: +1 <mw> +1 <FunkyPenguin> +1 <FunkyPenguin> i also like the webcam/multimedia topic <captain_magnus> Plus 1 <suseROCKs> Ok so let's make an AI to create a Wishlist day. We should collect ideas and avaialability of representatives before determining a date. <rodrigo_> yeah, any kind of special hardware stuff is good, like webcams, gps, cameras, etc <rodrigo_> well gps is maybe too specific :) <suseROCKs> and for our regular meeting, a Multimedia Theme. <suseROCKs> what do you think? <rodrigo_> +1 <mw> sounds good <mw> (+1) suseROCKs is personally biased towards Multimedia because he needs it for his a11y stuff <captain_magnus> Plus 1 <rodrigo_> suseROCKs: a11y theme would be good also, right? <suseROCKs> ok so Theme will be Multimedia. Date of theme? Who should we ask? <mw> we should ask abock and gabriel burt, at least <suseROCKs> rodrigo_, too early. I'm still coming up on stumbling blocks with a11y. Although I'd love a group meeting to discuss how we can overcome them. <suseROCKs> ok ask abock and "gburt"? <mw> suseROCKs: yep <suseROCKs> Ai to whomever know show to contact these folks. <suseROCKs> or send info to me to contact. <mw> i can do it <suseROCKs> MW gets ai-ed <suseROCKs> Ok I think we're done with this section. <mw> AI to mw: talk to abock and gburt about doing a multimedia themed meeting rodrigo_ notes all AIs <mw> Q&A time

User Q&A

Started at --> 00 <mw> last i checked there weren't any questions on the wiki <suseROCKs> asked before the meeting but will ask now in case anyone else knows... <suseROCKs> is there any app now in Gnome that I can use for creating video to post to youtube with my webcam? <FunkyPenguin> check the packman repo, they have a shed load of multimedia apps <captain_magnus> I hope not, for the sake of the rest of the world... :-) <suseROCKs> your loss captain_magnus I went shopping at Victoria's Secret yesterday. <suseROCKs> crap, that's going to be in the minutes now... captain_magnus shurgs <suseROCKs> another question: Anyone know about the Gnome Blog Entry applet? <rodrigo_> I've heard about it, but never used it <FunkyPenguin> is -lang needed in packages like glib2? <suseROCKs> rodrigo_, ok can't get it to work on my end, so wondered if someone here was an expert on it. <rodrigo_> sorry then :( <mw> FunkyPenguin: -lang subpackages aren't necessary, but i was given to understand that there was little to no downside in creating them <btimothy> suseROCKs: you can record directly from a webcam -> youtube via the browser + flash <suseROCKs> btimothy hmm will try that. <mw> FunkyPenguin: is this about getting cheese to work on SLE 10? <suseROCKs> btimothy, are you saying flash protocol or that I have to flash the cam when I'm recording?  ;-) <btimothy> suseROCKs: on youtube.com you say that you want to record directly from your webcam, and it starts recording from flash in your browser <btimothy> suseROCKs: it doesn't do the very best job, but it kind of works <btimothy> suseROCKs: i haven't tried it for a really long time though <btimothy> (3 months maybe) <suseROCKs> but there's nothing locally that I can use to record and edit before posting to such sites? <btimothy> suseROCKs: no idea <rodrigo_> suseROCKs: in packman there's for sure something <suseROCKs> ok <suseROCKs> still struggling to find something that's compatible with v4l2. But we can't have life that easy.  :-) <suseROCKs> I'm done with my silly questions... <claes> suseROCKs, Perhaps there something here that can help you: http://www.linux.com/base/ldp/howto/Webcam-HOWTO/framegrabbers.html <FunkyPenguin> mw yeah, my understanding is that if you want to use -lang it should b m4r3k has quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host)) <FunkyPenguin> oops couldnt finish my sentance <mw> FunkyPenguin: i think it's more of a developer question. can we discuss later? <FunkyPenguin> sure <mw> ok srag has quit (Success) <mw> anyone with other questions? <mw> no, ok, good m4r3k (n=marek@mantisha.m4r3k.org) has joined #openSUSE-gnome <mw> 10.3 update

10.3 Update

Started at --> 00 <mw> sreeves: <sreeves> ok so the repo has been updated with a couple new packages <sreeves> I have not seen anybody post problems to the mailing list <sreeves> anyone seen any issues, or something that is listed as fixed but does not appear to be ? <rodrigo_> haven't seen any problem with the lates tupdates, although haven't really tested all packages <sreeves> looks good then <mw> sreeves: anything else? <sreeves> nope <mw> ok

11.0 Development

Started at --> 00 <mw> hpj: your turn btimothy is glad he's not the only one today <hpj> hey <hpj> today i'm just going to ask people to talk a little about what they're doing in 11.0 <hpj> the floor is open <btimothy> oh, dang. your response time is much faster than mine! ;) <hpj> i've been around since the beginning :) <hpj> just being deluged by IMs <suseROCKs> Dramatic Entrances day today hehe <suseROCKs> hpj I don't know if you saw earlier, we proposed a 11.0 Wishlist Day. <suseROCKs> So maybe we can work on planning that. <hpj> that makes sense <hpj> so, nobody has anything for 11.0? <hpj> federico: how's intlclock doing, then? :) <suseROCKs> I'll be in charge of the Decorations Committee. <btimothy> i'm working on packagekit stuff still <mw> hopefully gnome 2.22.1, but that isn't news <mw> btimothy: how usable is the pk work you've done so far? <rodrigo_> well, cyberorg and I have newest pulseaudio, with bluetooth support -> http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/rodrigomoya:/pulseaudio/openSUSE_Factory <rodrigo_> if you want to test, feel free :) <hpj> rodrigo_: sterling captain_magnus goes to buy audio bt equipment <rodrigo_> lewing: ^^ <cyberorg> rodrigo_, it has bluetooth package, but lewing tried it and said it doesnt support bt yet <hpj> sreeves, captain_magnus, federico1 : main menu? <rodrigo_> ah :( <btimothy> mw: not very usable yet <lewing> rodrigo_: pa and the bt alsa driver don't play well together yet, I'm told it is being looked into <sreeves> there will be a new g-m-m next week for factory <rodrigo_> ok <captain_magnus> sreeves: Is the svn repo updated with all patches now? <sreeves> captain_magnus: the gnome svn repo ? <captain_magnus> sreeves: Yes <sreeves> not yet - still testing <hpj> anything else to report for 11.0? <federico1> captain_magnus: oh, are your performance patches in now? <mw> sort of - does anyone who doesn't have access to GNOME:UNSTABLE want it? <captain_magnus> federico1: They are in bugzilla... But guess you or sreeves need to implement them <suseROCKs> when is 11.0 expected to be in final release anyway? I heard April but someone else told me July? <federico1> captain_magnus: ok. sreeves, can you take a look while I finish sorting out intlclock? :) <sreeves> yep <mw> suseROCKs: i think there's a schedule posted on the wiki somewhere; i'm looking for it now <claes> suseROCKs, Roadmap says June 19 Public Release <suseROCKs> Thanks Claes. <mw> suseROCKs: what claes said. see http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap <mw> ok, anything else about 11.0 before we start developer Q&A? <mw> no, ok, good

Developer Q&A

Started at --> 00 <rodrigo_> sreeves: we could organize a patch review for libslab in #control-center, there are many patches from CC people in bugzilla that they want reviewed, so I'm sure we can get a few people to help in the review <sreeves> yeah that would be sweet - I will set that up <sreeves> my question is about recovering from bad updates ( assuming you are not in a vm where it's trivial) <sreeves> say like when you update and you get a kernel panic from the new kernel <sreeves> what tricks do people have for recovering from that ( non bootable system ) <mw> sreeves: two main ones <rodrigo_> I usually install the previous kernel :) <mw> sreeves: one is to note that kernels are often parallel installable, and if you didn't remove the old one, you can boot into that one to clean things up <rodrigo_> yeah, don't remove the old one, so if the new one doesn't boot, you boot with the old one <mw> sreeves: otherwise, the thing to do is to boot from a rescue disk of some sort and do some chrooting and whatnot <sreeves> how do you tell the updater not to remove the old one <rodrigo_> mw: although I think zypper replaces the kernel-* packages with the new versions always? <mw> rodrigo_: i'm not sure <rodrigo_> it seems so on my factory install <mw> i've definitely had more than one kernel installed in the past <rodrigo_> me too, in 10.3 <mw> yeah <mw> maybe they turn that off for factory because new kernels are pretty frequent <hpj> i think that would be a mistake <rodrigo_> sreeves: find out about that, it might be just a way to disable the replacement <mw> related: how many kernel people have we invited to themed meetings? <rodrigo_> not many iirc :) <hpj> zero? <captain_magnus> Zero would be the answer... <suseROCKs> hold on... <mw> wasn't one of the people who came to the networkmanager day a kernel dude? <suseROCKs> Theme meetings are meant as a way to attract the general population to our meetings, right? Would a kernel meeting be something the genreal pop wants to see? <mw> or the bt meeting? <captain_magnus> mw: Not that I know of but... Guess its possible :-) <captain_magnus> suseROCKs: Hmm... Not sure... It would be a pretty broad topic ivanz (n=i-nZ@adsl-83-100-186-239.karoo.KCOM.COM) has joined #opensuse-gnome <suseROCKs> then let's add it to the Themes page as a possible topic captain_magnus looks in horror as the meeting is overdrawn by more than 16 minutes... :-) <FunkyPenguin> and i havent had my whine yet <suseROCKs> captain_magnus, you're meeting from the luxury of a hotel room. <suseROCKs> you're hardly suffering from overtime here hehe <mw> i think it could make a good meeting theme - how changes in the kernel will impact the desktop experience <captain_magnus> suseROCKs: Luxury? Since when is staying at a hotel a luxury? <mw> anyway, any other questions? <FunkyPenguin> -lang <mw> FunkyPenguin: ah, right <FunkyPenguin> :) thanks <mw> FunkyPenguin: i'll first mention that the -lang subpackage will be the least of your problems getting cheese to build on SLE 10 <mw> FunkyPenguin: cheese requires features in X that weren't introduced in suse of any flavour until 10.2 <FunkyPenguin> fair enough, but i think the -lang macro needs to be used properly <mw> FunkyPenguin: right. what was your problem with it again? <FunkyPenguin> as it stands i could either patch the specfile; or better ask the maintainer to check if the macro is defined %{?lang_package} instead of %{lang_package} and %if 0%{?lang_package:1} ... %endif <mw> the maintainer? nags (n=nags@c-24-6-177-211.hsd1.ca.comcast.net) has joined #opensuse-gnome <FunkyPenguin> um the packager <mw> isn't that you? srag (n=sragavan@123.236.216.222) has joined #opensuse-gnome <FunkyPenguin> for glib2 <FunkyPenguin> that is the one that is causaing me issues <mw> i think you've lost me :/ <FunkyPenguin> ok, let me try again <suseROCKs> Is the meeting finished? <FunkyPenguin> trying to build cheese for < 10.3 i need to link glib2 <mw> suseROCKs: yeah, fp and i can continue <suseROCKs> ok

New Tasks

  • AI for rodrigo: investigate how to best automate nightly fresh installs
  • AI for suseROCKS: set up a page listing what's new and cool but maybe broken and therefore needs more testing attention
  • AI for mw: Invite multimedia developes to a themed meeting
