Old action items
<kl_eisbaer> I think we can start with the first topic: Old action items <kl_eisbaer> andreas_o: any news from your side ? <andreas_o> Sorry, no <kl_eisbaer> ok: James, Daniel and Jordi are missing? <kl_eisbaer> So: news from cyberorg? <cyberorg> hello and welcome everyone <cyberorg> we(the_code) have released easy-ltsp packages for opensuse and fedora 9 <cyberorg> http://www.luckylemon.de/?p=32 <cyberorg> it is a GUI tool for managing LTSP <kl_eisbaer> cyberorg: what about the docu ? ;-) <cyberorg> we also have latest packages with local app support available, so schools that requires resource heavy apps can now off load them to the client <cyberorg> ah, we have completely revamped our wiki <cyberorg> and a lot of new pages added <cyberorg> starting from http://en.opensuse.org/LTSP <anubisg1> read about it.. really a good job... i have to work on translation to move that pages on it.opensuse.org <cyberorg> and added useful tips like http://en.opensuse.org/LTSP/iTALC, building live CD and USB etc <cyberorg> so if anyone is running a network of over 5 clients, start using ltsp ;) <suseROCKs> up to how many clients? <cyberorg> that is all from kiwi-ltsp team, The_Code you have anything to add? <cyberorg> suseROCKs, 150M per client is required on the server <cyberorg> client can be any PC with as low as 128M ram <suseROCKs> nice <kl_eisbaer> cyberorg: can you please add "" and "" to each of your pages? <cyberorg> we dont touch local disks, so use them as ltsp terminal by pxebooting, and boot normally for usual OS on the disk <The_Code> no not really to this point <cyberorg> kl_eisbaer, k <kl_eisbaer> so it's easier to find them using something like http://en.opensuse.org/Category:LTSP <anubisg1> cyberorg : really? so i can resume my oooold desktop :) <The_Code> except for updating http://en.opensuse.org/Easy-LTSP <cyberorg> anubisg1, yes <kl_eisbaer> has anybody tried the tips on http://en.opensuse.org/LTSP/4.2 on a 5.0 installation ? <cyberorg> kl_eisbaer, we have new ones http://en.opensuse.org/LTSP/Tips_and_Tricks <anubisg1> no, no yet... i have to reinstall LTSP on my server.. than i'll do it <kl_eisbaer> ok <kl_eisbaer> any other news from LTSP around? <kl_eisbaer> otherwise I'd like to ask anubisg1 - any news? <anubisg1> about what? LTSP is not exactly my "section" but yes i have some news (about webinar and packages) <kl_eisbaer> so please... :-) <cyberorg> go ahead anubisg1, nothing else on ltsp front <anubisg1> well.. <anubisg1> first of all as i wrote on mailing list <anubisg1> Mr. Carugo is giving us the chance to use an openSUSE dedicated server <anubisg1> for our meetings <anubisg1> the project looks intresting and not so difficult to use... any talker need to have <anubisg1> skype and NX Client (both available on linux and windows) <anubisg1> there is the italian page http://www.didascauniversity.it/ <anubisg1> (translation with google works good) <anubisg1> so more english infos here: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.didascauniversity.it%2F&hl=it&ie=UTF8&sl=it&tl=en <anubisg1> because docs are italian PDFs i have to translate them to allow users to test it with me/us <kl_eisbaer> andreas_o: can you setup a wiki page describing the "how to use it", please? <kl_eisbaer> sorry, mean anubisg1 with the comment <anubisg1> yes of course... (when meeting ends ) <anubisg1> btw, Mr Carugo told that he talked eith you (kl_eisbaer( yet <kl_eisbaer> thanks! I think missing docu is currently the biggest problem... ;-) <kl_eisbaer> ? interesting... <kl_eisbaer> any other news from your side ? <anubisg1> yes, about packaging... <kl_eisbaer> so please start <anubisg1> i taked a look on packages... i fixed some spec files.. the last one is CLASS on education:server (still take a look on log, but i think it worked) <anubisg1> i found some dependencies issues on test repo..that should be fixed <anubisg1> with the packages available on OBS <kl_eisbaer> yes, saw the bugreport: http://www.opensuse-education.org/mantis/view.php?id=75 <kl_eisbaer> The class and grass problems should be fixed. <anubisg1> last thing... gnome-chemicals-utils should be downgraded.. the one we are trying to build requires libs <kl_eisbaer> netbeans is on my todo - and koha is a bigger problem.... <kl_eisbaer> can you do this (downgrade) for me, please? <anubisg1> that are missing on Factory too, because too new <anubisg1> ok i'll do... <kl_eisbaer> I like to update koha to 3.0 - but this needs a lot of work (I'm currently packaging perl-module number 16...) <anubisg1> kl_eisbaer : i'll take a look on it <kl_eisbaer> but as result the installation of koha should work like a charm on 11.0 :-) <kl_eisbaer> thanks <cyberorg> while we are talking packaging, i have added new launch scripts to italc, it now auto detects all the clients that it can control <anubisg1> btw... from my side, i think to had end... <anubisg1> questions? <anubisg1> cyberorg : always the best :D <japerry> cyberorg: heard there is an LTSP meeting going on in here ;-) <cyberorg> japerry, no, opensuse-edu meeting, we finished ltsp part :) <kl_eisbaer> japerry: feel free to ask questions in ~10-15min - I think we don't need any longer <cyberorg> btw, briefly italc is a great tool to manage multi distro/OS clients in a network easily <kl_eisbaer> cyberorg: that's why we have it in openSUSE, ne? :-) <kl_eisbaer> ok: just a look at my todos.... <kl_eisbaer> - gambas: is done. packaged and available for all openSUSE distros <kl_eisbaer> - informations about "how to" create the edu add on is available in the openSUSE wiki and in the SVN <kl_eisbaer> where the new directory opensuse-education-tools contains the scripts used to create it <kl_eisbaer> that's currently all on the official todo list ;-) <kl_eisbaer> So I think we can have a look at "2 Status of the wiki pages " <anubisg1> 1 moment please <kl_eisbaer> ok <anubisg1> kl_eisbaer : i'm looking koha now... it succeded.. what's wrong here?? (only dependencies stuffs?? ) <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: many things need to be done: currently it's more or less extracting the tarball - but 3.0 can do more.... <anubisg1> ok understood... <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: ...missing dependencies is just one step - now koha can be installed "the perl way" with perl Makefile.PL - but this needs further investigation do get this done in a buildroot <cyberorg> kl_eisbaer, any packages for http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Modules/Education ? <kl_eisbaer> cyberorg: that's jdsn's part.... <kl_eisbaer> since a year or so. <kl_eisbaer> I think he's already done some screenshots and the basic part in SVN <anubisg1> kl_eisbaer : %perl_make_install ?? >:) <The_Code> screenshots are in the wiki the page tells that ui is almost done <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: yes, something like this. But the problem is: koha asks some questions during the make <kl_eisbaer> The_Code: so we need to ask him via email what's going on <anubisg1> understood... EOF is our friend.. btw, http://pastebin.com/d501b2167 is a spec file of one of my perl packages <The_Code> kl_eisbaer, you have is mail address <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: writing perl packages is not the problem - done 16 alone yesterday in devel:languages:perl ;-) <kl_eisbaer> The_Code: jdsn@novell.com ... <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: the only problem is the time.... ;-) <The_Code> i will ask him <anubisg1> :'( :P <kl_eisbaer> so every help is absolutely appreciated <anubisg1> ok..as i told i'll take a look on it <kl_eisbaer> any other packaging questions? <anubisg1> wish list... is it in topic ? <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: atm not. But I think this shouldn't be a problem <kl_eisbaer> => added :-) <anubisg1> ok..so later ... no problem <kl_eisbaer> ok
Status of the wiki pages
<kl_eisbaer> Back to 2 Status of the wiki pages <kl_eisbaer> http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Development#Education_Packaging_Policy_.28draft.29 <kl_eisbaer> contains a draft which is a bit more "restrictive" than the current openSUSE packaging policy <kl_eisbaer> as it says: "Please add "Vendor: openSUSE-Education" to every package :-) <kl_eisbaer> the reason behind it: the "opensuse-education-release" package will add a "vendor" file <kl_eisbaer> this file allows packages from openSUSE-Education to be handled equal to the official openSUSE packages during update <kl_eisbaer> so an openSUSE-Education package can be updated without asking the user about the "vendor change" <kl_eisbaer> and vice versa <kl_eisbaer> thus said, I think it's legitim to try to build packages which are "openSUSE-Factory" ready <anubisg1> oh..well.. good news <kl_eisbaer> means: which follow the openSUSE packaging guidelines <kl_eisbaer> currently there's already a discussion in the openSUSE board (and on the mailinglist) about a "policy" for packages from the community <kl_eisbaer> I like the idea that the openSUSE-Edu packages will be the first ones who will be integrated into openSUSE ;-) <kl_eisbaer> when the board makes the decision to allow it <kl_eisbaer> I also added a short script there (and in SVN) which prepares a changelog entry for you <kl_eisbaer> so all you have to do is call this script and add your changes with your prefered editor <kl_eisbaer> the date/time line and the email entry should already match the SUSE guideline <kl_eisbaer> (note the simple "LC_ALL=POSIX TZ=Europe/Berlin date" line) <anubisg1> perfect.. <cyberorg> i have already started using it :) <kl_eisbaer> I think we should use this "Education packaging policy" from now on <kl_eisbaer> so our packages are ready if the time is right to integrate them into the openSUSE repo :-) <kl_eisbaer> Another point in this area: Please create a wiki page whenever you create a new package for openSUSE Education <kl_eisbaer> you can use the http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Wiki#Template_for_Application_descriptions <kl_eisbaer> "Template for Application descriptions " <kl_eisbaer> which should give your new page a beautiful layout :-) <kl_eisbaer> and automatically add it to the "Education Applications" category <kl_eisbaer> following James proposal, I'll extend the template with the "recommended age" Categories <anubisg1> i think "authors" section should be fixed <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: you mean the "developer= " section? <anubisg1> first author is showed with a simple * instead the small green square <anubisg1> yes, developers sorry <kl_eisbaer> ok - I'll have a look at the template <anubisg1> example: http://en.opensuse.org/Avogadro <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: looks like a whitespace problem <kl_eisbaer> added to my todo list <anubisg1> just for kwnoledge <kl_eisbaer> any other questions about the wiki ? <anubisg1> is one of the most known italian wiki: http://www.linuxpedia.netsons.org/index.php/OpenSUSE_Education >:) <kl_eisbaer> nice :-) <anubisg1> no, no more question from my side
Status of the next Edu-DVD
<kl_eisbaer> So next topic is "Status of the next Edu-DVD " <kl_eisbaer> http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/test/11.0/ already contains a new repo <kl_eisbaer> I just want to make some additional tests bevore I replace this one with the current one in http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/repo/1.0/11.0/ <kl_eisbaer> after anubisg1 tests, it looks like some dependencies needs to be updated <anubisg1> indeed... still have to report them... <kl_eisbaer> and I think we also need someone testing this repo with only the openSUSE-DVD added as repository <anubisg1> but the most annoining and easy to fix <kl_eisbaer> because some requirements (like apache2_mod-mysql for example) are not met if the full FTP repo is missing <kl_eisbaer> yes, the dependencies are mostly easy to fix - but someone has to run these tests.... ;-) <anubisg1> is the moodle one <anubisg1> there is 1.9.1 and 1.9.2 packages <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: yes - but not only moodle is affected by this one - mod_php5 is missing, too, IMO <kl_eisbaer> ah, sorry, misunderstand <kl_eisbaer> yes, moodle will be fixed with the next repo build <anubisg1> 1.9.1 lang rpm need moodle 1.9.1 that does not exist <anubisg1> because 1.9.2 is there ;) .. ok perfect <kl_eisbaer> The problem is that sometimes the mirror server isn't up to date during the sync <kl_eisbaer> and contains old and new packages <anubisg1> so i think you should use the main server... <kl_eisbaer> or (if somebody hasn't disabled x86_64 for a noarch package) has more than one release of a noarch package <kl_eisbaer> yes, using the main server is a good idea - but the main server doesn't allow rsync for anonymous users <kl_eisbaer> only mirror servers have the right credentials <kl_eisbaer> so the only possible way is to ask api.opensuse.org to transfer each package <kl_eisbaer> I'm currently going the other way around as we already have to merge different repositories which can contain the same package more than once <kl_eisbaer> so I rsync the repos from a mirror server <anubisg1> well <kl_eisbaer> and afterwards run a script which compares packages with the same name against their version and release number <kl_eisbaer> looks like the script doesn't work correct in all cases :-) <anubisg1> that script should keep newest ones.. :) <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: feel free to have a look at the script... :-) <kl_eisbaer> => https://svn.linux-schulserver.de/viewvc/packages/opensuse-education-tools/trunk/opensuse-education-tools/opensuse-education-tools-1.0/bin/make_testrepo.pl?view=markup <CIA-56> openSUSE-Education: lars * r1531 /packages/opensuse-education-tools/trunk/opensuse-education-tools/opensuse-education-tools-1.0/bin/make_testrepo.pl: sync script <anubisg1> perl?? .... mmm ... ¬¬ <kl_eisbaer> But we also need a Roadmap for the 11.0 release IMO :-) <anubisg1> i fixed road map page <anubisg1> upgrading it <anubisg1> http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Development/Edu-CD/Roadmap <kl_eisbaer> Thanks! <kl_eisbaer> What about releasing Beta2 on Friday? <anubisg1> IMHO is ok.. <kl_eisbaer> and afterwards "freeze" the current packages and just work on bugs? <kl_eisbaer> and the docu? <kl_eisbaer> so we can release RC1 in .....? <anubisg1> cyberorg , The_Code , Others?? <kl_eisbaer> any suggestions? <anubisg1> 10/15 days should be enought <anubisg1> (after beta 2 of course <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: fine with me <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: can you update the Roadmap page, please and post the new Roadmap everywhere? :-) <anubisg1> ok no problem... <The_Code> fine for me <kl_eisbaer> The_Code: so it's time to get Easy-LTSP "rock solid" until the GM :-) <anubisg1> ( i forgot some news.. i'll talk about that later) <The_Code> kl_eisbaer, there is undo redo saved states as missing task on my schedule and docu <kl_eisbaer> I think that's all for the Edu-DVD ?
Q&A Section
<kl_eisbaer> So anubisg1, I think you can start with your news... <The_Code> maybe i get it going <anubisg1> well <kl_eisbaer> The :ok <anubisg1> first of all i think everybody shows CIA-56 <anubisg1> i add this bot to report here any changes on oru svn repo <anubisg1> infact it do that: <anubisg1> (should report soon changes... ¬¬ ... eheheh ) <CIA-56> openSUSE-Education: anubisg1 * r1532 /packages/opensuse-education-tools/trunk/opensuse-education-tools/opensuse-education-tools-1.0/ldd2rpm/test: test page... Hello guys <CIA-56> openSUSE-Education: anubisg1 * r1533 /packages/opensuse-education-tools/trunk/opensuse-education-tools/opensuse-education-tools-1.0/ldd2rpm/test: deleted test files <anubisg1> ok done... is a fun and easy way to know recent changes <anubisg1> nd , and i think the most important thing <anubisg1> i don't know if somebody looked aboutlldd2rpm <anubisg1> i don't know if somebody looked about ldd2rpm <anubisg1> you'll find it here: opensuse-education-tools/trunk/opensuse-education-tools/opensuse-education-tools-1.0/ldd2rpm <anubisg1> on our svn repo... it allow packagers to find fast BuildRequires of binaries and libs <anubisg1> (thanks to Pascal Bleser a.k.a. yaloki ) <anubisg1> questions ? <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: yes: what about your "wishlist" topic? :-) <anubisg1> yep... <anubisg1> in last days i red education wishlist <anubisg1> i added infact a couples of packages (as wrote in mailing list) <anubisg1> does anyone thaked look on it? <anubisg1> what about a clean up ? <anubisg1> (already done bye me.. but more hands are better than one >:) ) <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: I'm fine with a cleanup - perhaps it's a good idea to add the wishlist permanently to our meeting agenda <anubisg1> feel free to do it <kl_eisbaer> ...which brings me to the next topic: the next meeting :-) <kl_eisbaer> any suggestions? <kl_eisbaer> I like to announce it earlier next time, so more people find the time to join <anubisg1> near to last RC to be sure to fix all annoining stuffs all together <kl_eisbaer> ok - so what about Tue, Sep. 2 ? <kl_eisbaer> or earlier? <anubisg1> no preferences right now <kl_eisbaer> any other suggestions? <The_Code> 2. Sep sounds good <anubisg1> i hope we could use..or at least had tested DIDASCA tools <kl_eisbaer> yes <kl_eisbaer> any other questions/ problems/ enhancements around? <The_Code> i would be available for testing, when i know what i have to do <kl_eisbaer> => starting Q & A Section <kl_eisbaer> Hi SLEducator! <cyberorg> question for everyone here, what package would you like to see included in opensuse-edu? <anubisg1> cyberorg : AlbertoP told be about openfoam <AlbertoP> yes, but not now, if ever :) <AlbertoP> the original idea was to package it for openSUSE <AlbertoP> openfoam is a very advanced simulation code for fluid dynamics <anubisg1> [20:28] <cb400f> are you also talking about kde4 edu stuff? <AlbertoP> but a) they're moving to ubuntu b) they're not at all open in their development, so I'm a bit disappointed with their strategy at this point, and I think it's worth to wait and see what they do before investing time on that idea <SLEducator_> hey! <anubisg1> SLEducator : wellcome back <SLEducator_> I've been trying to get in since 2 :( <SLEducator_> any chance you can copy the text of the meeting to a private chat? <kl_eisbaer> SLEducator_: no, just read the transcript posted on http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Meetings/Education_Meeting_2008-08-12 ;-) <kl_eisbaer> in a few hours... :) <SLEducator_> did i miss the whole thing? <kl_eisbaer> SLEducator_: we are currently at the last topic: Q&A <SLEducator_> great <kl_eisbaer> cyberorg: question for everyone here, what package would you like to see included in opensuse-edu? <anubisg1> SLEducator : http://pastebin.com/d48f32d39 <SLEducator_> ty anubisg1 <anubisg1> a bit long... but btw <SLEducator_> is there some way to "grep" the packages for age group type words <anubisg1> cyberorg : what we have to answer to AlbertoP ? <cyberorg> anubisg1, put them on wishlist :) <kl_eisbaer> SLEducator_: currently just by using the patterns <AlbertoP> cyberorg: anubisg1: wait before packaging that stuff. It's huge and you need to understand the structure on the installed version (there's no ./configure make and make install but they use an internal building system) <SLEducator_> As far as I can tell we have all the packages we need for now <anubisg1> AlbertoP : http://en.opensuse.org/Wishlist_Education#O <AlbertoP> some is cmake based, some is "home made" <anubisg1> ¬¬ ... ok... <kl_eisbaer> BTW: is somebody interested in the "R" stuff? <anubisg1> R ?? <AlbertoP> anubisg1: we'll discuss about that if you want. It's very easy and automated. Now I've to go out (holidayyyy!) <anubisg1> AlbertoP : ok .. bye! <AlbertoP> :) <AlbertoP> see you tomorrow <SLEducator_> bye AlbertoP <kl_eisbaer> anubisg1: http://www.r-project.org/ <cyberorg> dont think so, one of my friend who is hydrogeologist wanted something for his phd work, he couldnt figure out how to use it <SLEducator_> cyberorg: why does easy ltsp compile into a MS executable and DLL's? <cyberorg> SLEducator, because it is mono project <The_Code> SLEducator, because it is mono <kl_eisbaer> Marek Stopka has already some packages in the OBS - but he asks for help reviewing the specfiles <SLEducator_> I haven't been able to launch it <kl_eisbaer> SLEducator_: have you tried the RPM package? <SLEducator_> no but I will <The_Code> you should be able to launch it using: easy-ltsp <SLEducator_> I thouight so too <The_Code> did you get an error <cyberorg> SLEducator, just try the latest packages <SLEducator_> command not found <SLEducator_> any way <cyberorg> you will see shiny icon somewhere too <The_Code> try the rpm <SLEducator_> does anyone have any age group info on the packages? <SLEducator_> I want to finish the grouping work on the wiki <cyberorg> The_Code, post the announcement of packages on all the MLs too please <The_Code> cyberorg, yes <anubisg1> well.. others Q&A ? <SLEducator_> could someone explain how to use this "catagory" stuff in the wiki? <anubisg1> i think : simply add Questions... and we will Answer here... or not?? <kl_eisbaer> SLEducator_: it's easy: just add "[[Category:foo]]" (without the "") to a page <SLEducator_> and what do we get with that? <kl_eisbaer> and mediawiki will create a link at the bottom of your page pointing to this Category <SLEducator_> ahh <kl_eisbaer> http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Education <kl_eisbaer> for example <kl_eisbaer> you'll get all pages with that category automatically listed on that page <kl_eisbaer> so you don't need to search the entire wiki manually and/or create such a page manually <SLEducator_> cyberorg: is there some reason the default network in kiwi-ltsp is a 10 network and not a 192? <cyberorg> SLEducator_, default network on NCLP course is 10.0 and the server is 10.0.0.254 ;) <kl_eisbaer> SLEducator_: => http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Category <cyberorg> but that shouldnt matter, as easy-ltsp auto detects everything <SLEducator_> and so are most school internal networks, which causes an extra step for so many people <cyberorg> SLEducator_, easy-ltsp removes all extra steps ;) <SLEducator_> ok <SLEducator_> ty <SLEducator_> and ty to kl for the wiki link
End Meeting
<kl_eisbaer> ok - time for dinner here - I think we can close the official meeting. THANKS TO ALL FOR ATTENDING! :-) <kl_eisbaer> like to see all of you in the next meeting :-) Meeting ended at --> 2008-08-12 19:04:36
