Definition:
A VPN server is a server that allows clients to access it using a Virtual Private Network.
This allows clients not physically connected to f.e. a office network, to connect to that network (and use its resources) over a secure connection. This way of making external clients part of a secured network is called tunneling the VPN protocol is therefore also called a tunneling protocol.
