The text mode or command line interface is old way to control Linux box. Even today it is good to have it if GUI doesn't work. The keyboard combination Ctrl-Alt-F1 that turns on terminal saved many people from hours of reinstallation that would be the only exit when GUI fails and text mode is not available.
