From openSUSE

Version: 1.0

Situation

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100. After installing OpenSuse 10.3 and booting I loose all video leaving me with a computer that's rather difficult to use. I've tired moving to terminal screens, but find the same blank screen. Failsave mode gives the same results.

Procedure

Does anyone have a solution?

Note: the person who came up with this support database should be sent to user-interface school. Why should someone need to learn a new markup language to get support on a product. Unbeleavable! Come on people, get with the program... my watch says 2007.

Possible Solution

The Support Database is NOT used to ask for help. Therefore you don't need to learn a new markup language. ALL Dell hardware comes with mostly proprietary components. The drivers for all your hardware components are included in the Product Box with the Manuel etc. Dell do NOT publish any hardware info to M.S so you will never find a M.S update for any Dell hardware.

Your CD's that came with the unit contain possibly any or all of the following. Chipset Drivers, Video Drivers, USB Drivers, NIC Drivers, Sound Drivers - which all need to be loaded just for M.S Windoze.

Now onto Suse Linux - The best way to overcome you Video Issues would be to join a Mailing List. There are many lists if you do a search here for them. Join the most appropriate list. Ask you questions vie email - you WILL get an answer. I suggest you provide you Display Info and info on your Video Card and your CPU. It will come down to a switch that your proprietary Video Card requires. Make sure your BIOS has Palette Snooping Disabled if you have played in there. If you have NOT played with BIOS leave it alone.

Every component of your Dell is proprietary and Dell do not publish there hardware drivers to any one. There may be other hardware issues that you will face no mater what the O/S. Your PC was built and designed and shipped to support 1 Operating System. If you want to use a different Operating System other than the shipped one I would gather up all the Hardware info from the Dell site I could.

Good luck with the mailing lists - not many of us bite! - my watch says 08/2008
