SUSE Linux 10.1 (Final)

  • The bugs in the final version are listed here.
  • Setting up PPPOE requires kinternet that is not installed (no error is shown when restarting non-existant kinternet). Solution: use yast2 to add it. Bug #166997
  • knetwork manager does not work with "ask every time" password. Solution fix kinternet and select "traditional" rather than knetworkmanager setup method.

SUSE Linux 10.1 RC3

For RC3 there are only delta isos against RC2 and RC1. Have a look at the Applying Delta ISOs section of the Download Instructions how to use them.

  • Language dependent packages for the default language are not installed Bug 162064
  • YaST2 does not show the package description/summary for a lot of packages
  • The source with updates is added twice Bug 170113

A special Add-On CD with non-OSS software is available as well from [1].

SUSE Linux 10.1 RC2

For RC2 there are only delta isos. Have a look at the Applying Delta ISOs section of the Download Instructions how to use them.

  • Language dependent packages for the default language are not installed Bug 162064
  • Every update from a 10.1 Beta/RC adds another selection to the system Bug 160792.
  • X11 installation fails on some Intel chipsets, notably notebooks, using the i810 driver (Bug 168618). This will probably be worked around in RC3 by applying "noaccel" to the X11 configuration settings, therefore using all Intel/Uniwill in non-accelerated mode. :-(

A special Add-On CD with non-OSS software is available as well from [2].

SUSE Linux 10.1 RC1

  • Large scale testing showed a couple of issues especially with update of systems. I would advise everybody to be careful in updating a system - and not update a production system (see below).
  • The bootloader shows "SUSE Linux 10.1 10.1" Bug 165466
  • Installation of packages from the installation source with rug/zen-installer fails in the installed system Bug 165597. We have put fixed packages (zen-updater, rug, libzypp-zmd-backend) for this on the ftp server, download them from [3] .
  • Updating from a previous beta tries to delete far too many packages. You should see conflicts for this in the installation proposal. Bug 165798
  • Every update adds another selection to the system Bug 160792.
  • Installation sources are not available in the system Bug 165825
  • The YaST2 Xen module is not able to setup a VM (Bugs are getting filled now).
  • menu.lst is broken after installation - it contains global settings in a menu entry, preventing this menu entry to boot #164711
  • OpenOffice.org Calc broken

A special Add-On CD with non-OSS software is available as well from [4].

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta9

  • If you register during "Update Configuration" to setup your system for Online Updates and get an error messages, try to press "Ok" and then try again.
  • After successfull registration, you are offered an Online Update. The repository for that might not be up-to-date - and if it is, it will contain quite a number of patches to test Online Update.
  • Installation of downloaded release notes fails due to a RPM signature check.
  • Registration setup on x86-64 will fail with error:
    /usr/lib/zmd/query-pool not found during registration

Bug 162302

A special Add-On CD with non-OSS software is available as well from [5]. If this one is used during installation, note the following

  • The Add-on CD needs far too many CD changes Bug 159679
  • The progress (number of packages to install) is not updated Bug 161298
  • The "suspend" package in beta9 is broken, so the procedure described in S2ram will not work. Copy the version attached to comment #14 of Bug 159688 to /usr/sbin/s2ram if you want to test suspend to RAM.

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta8

  • The Windows Domain Membership dialog ("Samba authentification"), when called during installation, is empty.
  • RPM dump before update: If you do an update, please create an XML dump of the RPM database BEFORE starting an update (see below) so that you can provide it with any bugreports if requested.
  • rug installs i586 binary instead of x86_64 Bug 158187
  • The default runlevel is 3 on x86-64 systems (not on i386) Bug 158602
  • xen needs the xen-libs package which is not on the media, get it from [6] Bug 158831
  • The helper program parse-metadata used by zmd uses far too much memory, this hits especially with larger repositories like the factory tree Bug 157474.
  • When updating a system with an encrypted partition created with SUSE Linux >= 9.3, /etc/cryptotab is changed to the wrong encryption method "twofishSL92", this can corrupt the filesystem Bug 153576
Workaround: Change the encryption method to "twofish256" (except if your encrypted partition was created with 9.2 or older, of course).

Creating an XML dump of the RPM database BEFORE starting an update

It is most helpful to have a dump of the RPM database of a system in question. libredcarpet has a nice tool to generate an XML dump.

For i386 pre-built binaries are available here:

ftp://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1-beta8/dump_rpm (GWDG mirror)

Download the files to an extra directory e.g. /tmp/dump_rpm

Just set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to this directory , e.g.

 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/tmp/dump_rpm:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH /tmp/dump_rpm/cur_to_xml

It writes the XML dump to stdout which you can save into a file. If there is any error concerning update or package installation, please attach this file to your Bugzilla entry.

For non-i386 architectures, grab the tar-file from the ftp server and recompile. Use the following configure line for SLES9:

./configure --enable-backend-rpm --disable-python --disable-mono
--enable-rpm-version=4.1.1 --disable-static

Adapt the --enable-rpm-version parameter for other distributions if needed

After make is finished, you'll find the cur_to_xml binary below libredcarpet-7.0.0/tools.

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta7

We skipped Beta7, there was only a limited set of ISOs down for internal usage.

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta6

  • The CD 1 needs to remain in the cd drive after installing from it. Do not remove it during the reboot and wait for YaST to request CD 2.. Otherwise the installation of packages from CD 2-5 will fail afterwards Bug 153073.
  • The partitioner is broken in some cases Bug 151947. which might result in:
    • mixed up filesystem types - for example one chooses ext2 and the partition is getting formatted with reiserfs
    • creates double or totally obscure entries within the fstab of the system
    • makes inproper proposals for a standard partitioning
  • Download of Release Notes will fail.
  • The online test with download of Updates will fail.

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta5

Most of Beta4's rough edges have been smoothed but this beta is still not production ready

  • The CD 1 needs to remain in the cd drive after installing from it. Do not remove it during the reboot and wait for YaST to request CD 2.. Otherwise the installation of packages from CD 2-5 will fail afterwards Bug 153073.
  • Due to the integration of the new package manager which is not complete, note the following:
    • Some statistics do not work, e.g. you see "Size of packages to install: 0" - or "Number of packages to install: 0", or "Software: Default system (0)".
    • The graphical package manager frontend has only a limited list of "views", currently you get a list of all the packages and can only search in them.
    • After installation, if you go into the YaST packager, all installed packages are listed twice.
    • Adding a new installation source does not work.
    • Language dependend packages are not handled correctly. This results in the installation of one package-$lang package but not necessarily the one for the languages asked for.
    • An upgrade from a previous installation might fail, even one from 10.1 Beta3 Bug 153142
    • Abort button does not work during package installation Bug 150379
  • During an update from a previous release, packages that are not available anymore get deleted - once at the start of CD1 and then again at the end of CD1. Pressing Ignore a couple of times allows to continue. Bug 153135
  • The second part of the installation is done in text mode Bug 153066, but afterwards the graphical login manager is started.
  • X11 configuration during installation is totally broken in Beta5 due to a bug in package manager. Instead of the native X11 driver fbdev or even vesa driver will be configured. In order to create a valid X11 configuration stop xdm ("rcxdm stop") and use SaX2 for configuration ("sax2 -r"). ATI users should update the radeon driver first before executing SaX2. Otherwise the result will likely be a blank screen. Driver RPMs for i386/x86_64 are attached to Bug 153367 and are also on the ftp server in the fixed rpm directory.

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta4

Beta4 has a number of ROUGH edges, so read the following before you decide to download and test it.

  • The CD 1 needs to remain in the cd drive after installing from it. Do not remove it during the reboot and wait for YaST to request CD 2.. Otherwise the installation of packages from CD 2-5 will fail afterwards.
  • Due to the integration of the new package manager which is not complete, note the following non working pieces:
    • ncurses installation is not supported right now
    • Some statistics do not work, e.g. you see "Size of packages to install: 0" - or "Number of packages to install: 0", or "Software: Default system (0)".
    • The graphical package manager frontend has only a limited list of "views", currently you get a list of all the packages and can only search in them.
    • Only a fresh installation is supported. Update from a previous installation is not working!
    • Only adding of selections works. If you want to remove a selection, remove all packages in that selection and run the resolver manually with the "Check" button..
    • After installation, if you go into the YaST packager, all installed packages are listed twice.
    • Language dependend packages are not handled correctly. This results in the installation of one package-$lang package but not necessarily the one for the languages asked for.
    • It is not possible to abort installation while installing packages.
    • Network Installations: smb/cifs does not work, http, nfs and ftp do work.
    • There are cases where during a ftp installation packages for the wrong architecture get installed Bug 151933 and Bug 151954.
  • Installation with LVM on top of a Software RAID fails Bug 152237
  • Download of Release Notes will fail.
  • No Release Notes will be shown. Except in the first installation screen.
  • The online test with download of Updates will fail.
  • VMWare installation is possible - but YaST does not show information about your hardware configuration (graphic cards, printers, sound, ...). Click "next" in this step - the X11 server will not start, but you can configure the virtual machine afterwards.
  • The third translation cycle has been done; most parts are properly localized now. Missing parts are the release notes and some menu entries. YaST is translated with minor exceptions (see the status files such as status-de.all for German).

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta3

  • SATA CDROM/DVDs cannot be accessed (this might be an x86-64 only bug). Especially installation from them is not possible.
  • The first round of translations has been done and changes added. But not everything is translated yet, please report bugs against the translation only with beta4.
  • If X applications crash, update the the fontconfig RPMs that are available from [7] Bug #147292.
  • Our current kernel builds have the debugging options set on to help us to detect and nail down bugs. This is a temporary measure only and we plan to revert this.
  • To run beagle on the Gnome default system, also install "beagle-gui"; fixed for beta4 Bug #144606 and Bug #147568

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta2

Find PPC only bugs at the end of this section.

  • KDE's media handling does not work (my computer shows wrong informations and inserting new media does not open a query dialog). Workaround: After installation remove /opt/kde3/share/services/kded/networkstatus.desktop before you log into KDE.
  • If X applications start very slow, update the fontconfig and fonts-config RPMs that are available from [8]. If it still doesn't work after updating these packages and running "SuSEconfig --module fonts", run "fc-cache -v -f" as root.
  • There is a large Perl warning on the console. "Useless use of a constant in void context at /usr/share/YaST2/modules/LibStorage/StorageInterface.pm line 119". It is harmless and fixed for Beta 3. Bug #144296
  • No "Online Update" installation source is available, and no online update notification applet is included.
  • Beta2 is not fully translated. Please do not report missing translations; reporting weak translations is appreciated (typos, wrong wording, etc.).
  • Installation with the root filesystem on LVM is impossible. Bug #145928

PPC only

Also see beta1 bugs.

  • The radeon driver causes garbage on the GNOME desktop. Enable the EXA option in the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf; add
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"

For more information, see bug#144401

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta1

Find PPC only bugs at the end of this section.

  • Enabling the firewall during installation does not work and/or internet test does not work Bug #143751.
  • If you use NetworkManager, network is not setup after installation Edit /etc/sysconfig/network/config and set:
    NETWORKMANAGER=yes  (instead of no)
and then run "rcnetwork restart" Bug #144139.
  • NetworkManager has some known bugs that have already been fixed. Even if you don't install NetworkManager, the network init scripts complain. Bug resolved #144032
  • GNOME: Calling "Search for Files" from the main menu is borked in beta 1; use gnome-search-tool on the command line (or kerry :-) for testing beagle. #144345
  • KDE won't handle new devices correctly as subfs entries are incorrect and not recognized by HAL Bug #142598.
  • The software selection for a 64-bit x86-64 installation does complain about a conflict in the package selection. Enter the package manager and press "Ignore all" in the dialog which shows conflicts for compat-32bit.
  • To load ide and input modules automatically, activate the last two lines in /etc/udev/rules.d/80-sysconfig.rules.
  • If X applications start very slow and you have updated from an earlier 10.1-alpha snapshot, remove the contents of /var/cache/fontconfig/* and in your home directory ~/.fonts.cache-2 Bug #143715
  • Theming is not complete, there's still 10.0 theming used in many places.
  • No "Online Update" installation source is available, and no online update notification applet is included.
  • Beta1 is not fully translated. Please do not report missing translations; reporting weak translations is appreciated (typos, wrong wording, etc.).
  • The ncurses YaST installer is broken Bug #144594, you cannot select any packages in it.
  • There is a large Perl warning on the console. "Useless use of a constant in void context at /usr/share/YaST2/modules/LibStorage/StorageInterface.pm line 119". It is harmless and fixed for Beta 3. Bug #144296

PPC only

  • Some Macs with 256MB or less will not boot. The kernel crashes early in OpenFirmware. Copy CD1/suseboot/linux32.gz and initrd32 to your harddisk, gunzip the kernel and add both files to your bootloader config. Cause is currently not known.
  • The radeon driver causes garbage on the GNOME desktop. Enable the EXA option in the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. See bug#144401

SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha4

  • The first time a user logs in on the console, an error is reported. A second login works.
  • The graphical login does not work. Workaround: Login on the console and change /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession as follows:
--- /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession	2005-11-21 22:22:10.000000000 +0100

SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha3

  • acpid might not run due to a race with the Xserver (Bug #133440) - and then powersave will not run either. A workaround is available (see Bugreport, comment #8).
  • After first installation the kdm won`t start!

SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha2

  • libfontconfig does crash after installation or update, this affects most GUI applications like KDE or Gnome. You need to run "fc-cache --force" manualy as root to fix this issue. Bug 128080
  • pilot-link has been updated to version 0.12pre4, not all packages do build against this version.
  • Gecko 1.8 engine is used as default for all gecko based browsers, not all packages do build against this version.
  • New Mono version broke the build of some C# applications, like iFolder or the mono-debugger.
  • Package yast2-hardware-detection is not installed by default. Select it manually in the package selection otherwise yast will not be able to configure your hardware. Bug 133641

SUSE Linux 10.1 Alpha1 (Codename "Auckland")

  • The distribution identifies itself as "10.0.42 Alpha1" - and has in quite a lot places the 10.0 branding, including the 10.0 release notes. This is a known feature ;-)
  • kdepim3 cannot get installed. We've put on the mirror besides the ISOs a kdepim directory with updated files.
  • Internet test will not work since downloading of patches is not set up.

SUSE Linux 10.0

See Bugs:Most Annoying Bugs 10.0 for hopefully obsolete bugs.
