Brother HL2040 HOWTO

Geeko Although there are other articles available on the Internet for installing and setting up your Brother HL-2040, because I currently own one myself I thought I would write an up to date article.

Requirements

  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is installed (and should be in most Linux distributions)
  • You are using RPMS downloaded from Brother's website
  • You are using a USB connection to your printer

Tested SUSE versions

  • SLED 9
  • OpenSUSE 11.0
  • OpenSUSE 11.1

Step 1

Allow your printer to be detected and download drivers:

  • Plug in your printer and make it is turned on. Then click the OK button.
  • Download brhl2040lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm and cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm.
  • Click here to download brhl2040lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm
  • Click here to download cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm

Step 2

Install and configure the drivers:

  • Right click brhl2040lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm and click Open with Install Software and then right click cupswrapperHL2040-2.0.1-1.i386.rpm and click Open with Install Software.
Warning
You must do this in this order, not the other way around
  • Goto YaST and click Hardware > Printers and then click OK and you're done! You should be able to print straight away.
