From openSUSE
BIOS is acronym for Basic Input Output System, program stored in a ROM or other type of non-volatile memory chip (EPROM, EEPROM) that is running when we power on the computer. It is designed to test computer components and provide basic communication with computer system. Linux needs BIOS only during boot up time.
