Archive:S.u.S.E. Linux 4.2

S.u.S.E. Linux was released in May of 1996. It was the first release of the new and independent S.u.S.E. distribution, based on Jurix. The reason the distribution started on version 4.2 was to refer to a number in "The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. This release was not available in English, and any preceding releases from S.u.S.E. GmbH were translated versions of SLS (what early versions of Slackware were based on). There were a few Beta releases of S.u.S.E. in the few years before S.u.S.E. Linux 4.2 was released. The succeeding release of S.u.S.E. Linux 4.2 was S.u.S.E. Linux 4.3. S.u.S.E. stood for "Software und System Entwicklung", or Software and Systems development. The distribution line continues to this day, as openSUSE, making openSUSE the third oldest surviving distribution after Slackware and Debian.
