It is the most recent stabilized, fully integrated edition of SUSE Linux. If you are looking for a stable version of Linux to run on your personal computer or home server, this is the best choice.

The DVD versions of SUSE Linux contain some proprietary components such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, RealNetworks RealPlayer, Sun Java Runtime Environment, Macromedia Flash Player etc. The CD version of SUSE Linux contains only open source components. If needed CD6 (Addon CD) can be downloaded which provides some proprietary components as on the DVD versions.

NB : Since Oct 13, The SUSE Team have remastered the SUSE Linux 10.1 ISO images.

This new release combines the 10.1 GM and all online updates that we have released for 10.1 so far (until Oct 9), including libzypp, which should make the installing and working experience much smoother for everyone.

[NB: Do the following only if you have downloaded the ISOs before Oct, 13]

The package manager in SUSE 10.1 is regrettably broken on most systems. To correct this you should do the following after you have installed SUSE:

• Open Yast chose "online update configuration" , click next and wait until finished.
• Press the updater icon on you taskbar/panel
• If it updates, congratulations, all is well.
• If it throws up an error. Close it.
• Follow the instructions in this SDB article or this mail.

• Download SUSE Linux 10.1

Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, it may take several hours to download SUSE Linux. If you prefer to avoid a lengthy download process, you may purchase a copy of SUSE Linux 10.1 with a printed manual (Start-Up guide) and free installation support at a retail shop, a web store, or directly from Novell.

From time to time, ISO CD or delta-ISOs are released with a name (Alpha 1, RC 8...).

• Alpha indicates a very early release, which is probably quite buggy.
• Beta indicates an early release, with which many people can work and report bugs, but is still not for production use.
• RC (Release Candidate) indicates that few or no bugs remain, and if nothing is wrong, it will be renamed "RC GM" as a future final release. Beware, there may be very unpleasant hidden bugs (as was the case for 10.1).

If you intend to test for bugs or contribute patches, choose this version of openSUSE. Currently, a development stream of openSUSE 10.2 is available for your review. This is an unsupported, open source only, preliminary edition of openSUSE that contains bleeding-edge packages and represents the latest development snapshot. Please read the Most Annoying Bugs before you decide to download and test it.
